A "Treasure" Long Before It Was an Export

Manuka honey comes from bees foraging on Leptospermum scoparium, a flowering shrub native to New Zealand and southeast Australia. Long before it became an international wellness export, the manuka plant itself held a central place in traditional Māori medicine, where it was referred to as a "taonga," or treasure. The Scientist Who Took the Folklore Seriously

Serious scientific attention arrived largely through the work of Dr. Peter Molan, a biochemist at the University of Waikato. Starting in the 1980s, Molan's research demonstrated that manuka honey's antibacterial activity was substantially stronger than that of ordinary honey — and, crucially, that some of that activity persisted even when the honey's hydrogen peroxide content (the antibacterial mechanism common to most honey) was neutralized. Something else in manuka honey was doing the work, and for years, nobody could say exactly what.

The 2006 Discovery That Explained It

The mystery compound turned out to be methylglyoxal, or MGO — identified in published research in 2006 as the source of manuka honey's distinctive "non-peroxide" antibacterial activity. MGO occurs in small amounts in most honey, but manuka honey contains it at concentrations far beyond typical floral honey, which explained the outsized effect Molan and others had been observing for two decades. This discovery is what led directly to today's MGO grading system, where manuka honey is now sold and priced according to its lab-tested methylglyoxal concentration rather than vague marketing claims.

It's worth being clear about what MGO research actually covers: the strongest and most consistent evidence relates to antibacterial and wound-related activity, not blood sugar specifically.
